This is what he sent me to share...
Aldste Denton: I'm going to not write a weekly email this week since I have way too many personal emails to respond to. People have been treating me really good here. I'm going to the Stegeby's house tonight for dinner (you know... doctor Jones's sister? The guy that delivered me?) Haha what better place to celebrate my birthday? Seriously such a small world. They're feeding us haystacks. đź™Ź I'm just going to send you pictures now so hope you're ready!
Love you mom!

Hey everybody!

It's been a fun-filled week full of adventure and this transfer is slipping away faster and faster! Where is my time in Sundsvall going?

I went to Ă–stersund to bring the sacrament to some saints out there. Long bumpy car ride. Worth it though. We were so close to Norway we could have thrown a stone over there. I even met a guy from Norway.

Also our investigator Mikael came to church and loved it! We're meeting with him again tonight.

Also more and more and more snow. I think our car has gotten stuck like seven or eight times this winter but we've always been able to get out with a little bit of prayer and a lot of shoveling. This time was different though. We got stuck in a big pile and there was a hill we couldn't see hidden underneath the snow. Our car wasn't going anywhere. The fender was high centered and everything. It was at our investigators' house and they were super nice about it. Also, turns out , we have towing insurance. We were even able to teach the word of wisdom while we waited for the tow truck. So that was an adventure for sure.

Hope you all have a great week!
Love you all!

Six Months - Week 25

Six Months - Week 25

Hey!

So I officially celebrated six months as a missionary this week! Feels weird to have a quarter done! Especially since I'm still in my first area! Also check out this cool miracle that happened!

After a long morning yesterday of trying to find a ride for John and finally finding someone who would have to drive thirty minutes out of their way to pick him up, I started thinking about the branch and how the weight of responsibility for the branch really rests of just a few faithful families. They already even drive half of the branch to church and now we are asking them to drive our investigators who for the most part have very modest resources. I could imagine how the members might be feeling a little overwhelmed. So one of the things I asked for that morning as I opened my fast was that we would find a family this week, that would all be baptized, become stalwart in the gospel, and be an asset spiritually and temporally to the branch. The kind of family that will raise burdens off the shoulders of their fellow saints, and not add more to their already overwhelming task list. I also prayed for the other Elders in Sundsvall. I had seen their schedule for the next week and the fact that their one investigator was unable to meet was pretty evident. They would be doing a whole lot of contacting and whole lot of tracting. I prayed that they would have real progress and success in their area. So that night, we are getting close to the time to break our fast. We're about to drive home. It's about 7:00. As we get in the car, the other elders call us just to tell us that they had found a family of five from Iraq, all above the age of eight, who were all very positive and very interested. They invited them in, fed them, and even got rid of their tea after a brief discussion about the word of wisdom. They were able to teach the entire restoration and were invited to come back. The family is also fluent in Swedish, English, and Arabic, which apart from being rare is exactly what we need for some of our Arabic speaking members who don't understand anything in church.
As we made the drive home, I thought about what I had fasted for. God had answered every detail of my prayers! Including the ones in behalf of the other Elders and their area. I was so impressed by this experience. Then I thought about my prayers that this family to be found would become an asset to the branch both temporally and spiritually. Although usually filled with faith and devotion, it's pretty uncommon for refugee converts to have a car or be financially sound. Still, I had a feeling in my heart that this family had a car and that they would be financially able to lift the branch temporally. When we got home, Elder Wolff confirmed my suspicion. They did have a car, and they all had smart phones and appeared very financially stable, even wealthy.
I believe in the power of fasting and paying a generous fast offering. This was a super sweet experience reminding me that God loves us and answers our prayers.

Have a great week!

Week 24 - The Life

Week 24 - The life

Hey Everyone!

So my companion and I went tracting in this place called Spikarna. It's a town on the island right next to Sundsvall called Alnö. Actually it's a tiny island off the coast of Alnö. We don't really know what to to expect, but when we get there it's absolutely beautiful. We have to park our car right outside because there isn't enough room on the little island for us to park. There's a little sign explaining this for us. Then we get out and walk across this tiny bridge to this tiny island. As we're crossing, we see this scene to our right: the ocean which is grey with mist hanging so low it's touching the water, a snowy shoreline, and right where a single sunbeam is touching the water, four geese in a perfect line are flying with there feet in the water all maybe two stone tosses away. So as we're talking about how we just saw a scene from animal planet, we turn the corner and see a reindeer fifteen feet in front of us. Then after taking a picture, we look back to the bridge and see two more walking on the frozen canal between Alnö and the little island we're on. It was incredible.

I'm so grateful God gives us moments like that in life. Seeing the beautiful world He has created always gives me more trust in His wisdom, power, and love. It's easier to trust someone when you can tell their qualified for their job. The Earth with all its majesty and beautiful intricacies is like God's credentials for His divine Fatherhood over us. It's here for us to explore and examine, and to testify that God lives, that He is the God of Glory, and that He loves.

What else... Oh yeah! Golden investigator Mikael said he would read and pray! He's read the entire Bible and believes in God and is very sensitive to the Spirit. He said felt it when we prayed.

Also we ate this bomb Iraqi meal last night with our good friend Benjamin. Pictures below.

                                                Just a little comp inventory...

There's a reindeer in this picture

                                                    Also this one

                                         Two in this one!

                                                   This one has Arabic food.

This one doesn't because we ate it all.

Week 23 - Mr. Blue Sky

Week 23 - Mr. Blue Sky

Okay I know I talk about the sun a lot but this is cool. We are gaining tons of light and the day that we will reach 12 hours of sunlight is on March 18 which just so happens to be my birthday... so that's a pretty sweet birthday gift I guess you could say.

We had our investigator Jimmy come to church for the third time yesterday! Also Daniel was an inactive guy who called us up one day and now he wants to go home teaching, he's coming to church every week, and he will be ordained an elder in April. Crazy right? He just came out of nowhere and now he's on fire.

On Thursday we had a dance night with the branch. We taught them how to whip and we also danced really hard to Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra. It was a throw back for sure.

Other than that just another sick lit week here in Sundsvall!
Hope you all have a good week!

The young women had a valentines day activity fund raiser at the church so me and my companion went on a date. This is a decoration from that event.

                                                           This is my companion.

Week 22 - Bless up

Hey everyone!

Splits with Elder Bringhurst was the best! Learned a ton and it was awesome to talk about home and good times and stuff. 10/10. He asked me at the end the thing that has taught me the most on my mission so far. I thought about it and realized that it was actually being rejected. You really begin to understand the Savior in a new way when you are rejected for his sake. You understand a little what he went through and you recognize the times you close the door on Him and don't want to hear what He has to say. It's really a sacred opportunity if you think about it.

Transfer calls came and I'm staying in Sundsvall! I am entering my fourth transfer here today and I reach my six month mark at the end of this month and I'm trying to figure out where all that time went... I'm now the old geezer in Sundsvall that knows all the branch's secrets. Everyone in my original district has transferred and two have gone home. Weird feeling! Elder Moss is heading down to Jönköping, then it'll just be me left!

I gave a talk on Sunday about prayer. Some things I learned from preparing: sincere prayer can make a world of difference in how happy you are, praying for those you love can give you peace and assurance for their welfare, praying with gratitude reveals how the Lord was involved in your day or week or month or life.  So get on your knees! ??

I love you all! Have a great week :)

Week 21 - Hope

Week 21 - Hope

Super crazy good week. I learned a lot about hope and how it is the antidote to discouragement. My companion Elder McCarl is a really spiritual guy. When I told him I was discouraged, he told me the next day that he felt inspired that I should read the parable of the vineyard in Jacob 5. He said "don't ask me why, I just felt like I should tell you." Well let me tell you, it was EXACTLY what I needed. I realized how much I could relate to the master of the vineyard when he sees bad fruit and asks, "What more could I have done?" I realized that when I feel sad when the people I love don't progress like I know they can even despite my best efforts, that that is exactly how the Lord sees me when I don't progress like I can. He cries when I don't make the decision to follow Him and be as happy as I could be. What I loved was how each time there was bad fruit, the master of the vineyard moved forward in hope and eventually there is good fruit. How grateful I am that the Savior has not once given up on me and not once will he ever say I'm not worth His effort. That's the kind of hope and patience I want to have. The way Paul puts it, "Ye that ploweth should plow in hope." No effort is wasted in proclaiming the gospel if it is done in faith with hope of the harvest in mind.

An another note, Jimmy one of our investigators came to church!! Woot woot đźŽŠđźŽ‰ It was super awesome and he wants to meet like two or three times during the week! The guy is catching fire!

Hope you all have an incredible week.
Love,

P.S. Aldste Denton also included this story in additional email......

Oh you ready for a story?

So we had an investigator in church yesterday. Super Awesome. He also said he'd come to the YSA FHE tonight. His name is Jimmy. Anyways, it was our branch conference and the entire mission presidency was there since Sundsvall is part of a district not a stake. What a day for Jimmy to come to church, right? President Youngberg talked to him right before the meeting and then right after asked him if he had learned anything. So in Priesthood one of the members of the presidency started telling a story. He's from Göteborg or Gothenburg for the English speaking folks. Anyways, he served his mission in England at the exact same time as his twin brother who served in a different mission in England. The last six months of his mission, he got transfered outside of his mission boundaries to be a zone leader with his twin. During that transfer, Gordon B. Hinckley came and toured their mission. He spoke to all of them in a room together. He stopped in the middle of his address and looked right at these two brothers and said "You're the Mattson twins, aren't you." Then he said to everyone else in the room. "Excuse me while I talk to just these two for a minute." Then he told them that Sweden hadn't had much action for years. In the early days of the church, hundreds of thousands of saints came from Sweden to Salt Lake and it was one of the most successful spots for missionary work at that time. Then he told them "When you go back to Sweden, you tell them there's going to be a second harvest in Sweden that will be greater than the first." That was in 1972. These two spoke with President Hinckley in 1981 while serving as stake president and bishop or something when he came to visit and asked if he remembered them. He didn't recognize them at first, but when they told him who they were he said, " Yes I remember, and I remember what I said to you. That was inspiration and I'm sure it will happen. There will be a second harvest." He talked about millions of people joining and staying faithful to the end. He also mentioned a cleansing process that would proceed it. Then in 1997 President Eyring came to Sweden and I don't remember what for, but president Eyring was speaking to a big audience and in his talk he said "President Hinckley told me to say that there will be a second harvest in Sweden and he told me to say that it starts now. That those who believe it will happen will experience it and those who don't will miss out on its blessings." Since that time, there's been action in Sweden. Lots of congregations have shrunk, scores have become inactive, and some have apostatized from the church including this man's twin brother.  Doesn't this all sound like your reading the Book of Mormon? So I had heard all of these things before I even left actually. I didn't know any of the places or people, but when I got my call I got a letter from the mission office telling this story about the two twins and the promises of a second harvest and also a dedicatory prayer offered by Elder Monson in the 60's rededicating the land of Sweden for missionary work which promises a second harvest. Pretty intense right? It makes me think of Jacob 5 where when the master of the vineyard wanted good fruit, he would dig, dung, prune, graft, and cut off the evil branches in order to produce good fruit. That looks like exactly what's happening here. Especially in the mission. Standards are raising like crazy in our mission. Apparently this mission is totally different than it was even a year ago. The type of missionaries coming in are dedicated and right now there are sooo many young missionaries in the mission. President Younberg is new since the summer but he's already raised the standard of obedience wayy higher and keeps raising our sights. Elder Ballard also spoke to all of Europe after he had also made a visit to Stockholm in November or October and told everyone in Europe to believe in miracles and to shun apathy. He told us a story of calling down rain in Ethopia when he was a seventy. Also, I have had like four different members over the last two weeks ask me and my companion for one or more Books of Mormon to give to their friends. The members here are feeling the momentum. We also had a Sweden wide fast a few Sundays ago for missionary and reactivation work. We had a guy call us a few weeks ago who said "Hi I am a resting member of the church, but I want to come back. Can you help me with that?" He had an interview with president Youngberg on Saturday and now he's going to become an Elder in April. Hasn't missed a Sunday in over a month.

I hope you understood some of that. But the point is, Sweden is seeing miracles, and it's going to see more.
